What to do after getting scammed or hacked?

Updated: Mar 13, 2021

No matter how fully prepared we are, there still remains a possibility that these may happen to us. If that ever happens, the first thing that comes into our mind is to reduce the impact as much as possible. Here are some ways to respond to scams or hacks appropriately.

  • Reset password after receiving a message about an unexpected new login. The hackers may have known your password and will do anything they want with the account, whether they will use it to threaten you more money or record down your personal information to go for grandparent scams. Your password is one of the roots of the hacking process, so changing it will stop them from continuing their progress.

  • Call the bank to freeze the debit/credit card and talk to them about it if an unauthorised transaction happens. By freezing debit/credit card, all transactions using the card will be halted, therefore eliminating any chance for hackers to transfer your money away. The bank will ensure that no more money is taken out of your bank account.

  • Make a police report. As hacking into bank accounts and transferring money away is a crime, the police have responsibility for catching and arresting them.

  • Request help from IT professionals if your device is hacked and locked after calling your emergency contact. The professionals have the knowledge to counteract scams and hacks, so let them do the work and have them by your side to hopefully solve the issue. They will evaluate the severity of the scams or hacks, and therefore will make appropriate actions to minimize the damage.

It is unfortunate that these things happen, which is why having knowledge of scams and hacks is crucial. When you face these things, try not to panic which often is easier said than done. Rather, focus on doing all the steps needed to minimize the damage. From there onwards, you will realise that nothing else can be done and it is up to the professionals to deal with the issue.
